Jersey Galleries Expanding

The new Jersey Gallery section of the site is one of the things I'm most proud of here on Icethetics. It really is a unique way of presenting an NHL uniform design database. And it just keeps expanding.

Today I added a third category under the Jerseys tab at the top of the page: Specialty Jerseys. They're not quite considered third jerseys since they aren't worn often enough and usually have a limited lifespan. A perfect example is the first entry, the Calgary Flames vintage sweater being worn five times this year against Canadian rivals.

Of course that's not the only new thing in Jerseys since the last time I mentioned here on the blog — at which point we had only four third jersey galleries. Today, we have 21 different galleries — and more are on the way!

Among the 16 alternate jersey galleries are the Wild, Pens, Blues, Bolts, Kings, Sabres, Sharks, Sens, Canes, Coyotes, Bruins and two for the Hawks! There are also four Winter Classic galleries from the last two outdoor games — though there's still a lot of work to do on the Hawks and Wings.

The cool thing about these galleries is that just like anything we do here on Icethetics, it's interactive. Readers are able to rate jerseys from 1 to 5 stars. And based on the number of votes received so far, I'd say this is a very popular addition to the site.

I'm still very hard at work on this project and I just wanted to keep you updated on the status of it. In the coming weeks and months I'll be adding dozens of new galleries. And once we get past all of the alternate/specialty jerseys, it's on to home and road. But there's still a lot to do.

If you feel like helping out, I'm always in search of a great game photo gallery!

Hope for Haiti

While we're on the topic of charity today, one of the worst natural disasters in history happened on Tuesday. I can't begin to imagine the devastation and despair in Haiti right now. That being said, Icethetics is making a modest donation to the recovery efforts in the island nation. I'd encourage you to do the same if you haven't already.

I also figured that one way we can keep Haiti in the thoughts of Icethetics readers is by putting together some kind of design contest. There'd be no prize (so "contest" may be misleading). It would just be a way to bring continued awareness to the tragedy.

So if you're an Icethetics concept artist (or not), think about designing a Haitian national hockey team jersey. Obviously, the country's never fielded an actual team, so you'd have to start from scratch. It would be like the Jamaicans having a bobsled team— Wait...

Anyway, I just thought this would be something nice to do for a good reason. Send in your concepts by email and I'll add them to this post. Here's a graphic that might help you get started.

Pink in the Rink

I've had a few days to recover from my awesome trip to Las Vegas last weekend. Wish I didn't have to come back. Ever. The sooner I can get out of Florida, the better.

In going through my email this week, I noticed a couple of notes regarding "pink in the rink" events going on throughout the hockey world. Traditionally, we see this most heavily in October, as that is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. But maybe it's January in Canada? I don't know.

The ECHL's Victoria Salmon Kings and WHL's Lethbridge Hurricanes (and possibly others) will be wearing pink-infused jerseys in action tonight which will later be auctioned to support breast cancer research. Yay for good causes!

Icethetics reader Stuart writes in about the Salmon Kings, providing a link to details of the jersey auction. The highest bidders will be winning the sweaters right off the players' backs — well in at least one case.

Only one live auction will take place tonight in Victoria. The winner of that will take goalie David Shantz's pink jersey.

Two silent auctions will kick off tonight at 6 PM (Pacific time) for jerseys being worn by Patrick Coulombe and Wes Goldie. Bidding closes when the second intermission ends and winners get their due right after the game.

Two online auctions, which began on Tuesday and end tomorrow, will see the winners cash in on sweaters worn by Olivier Latendresse and Jimmy Sharrow.

The team's web site is quick to point out that this is the first time in the team's six-year history that the players will skate in pink. Money raised from the event tonight goes to the B.C. Cancer Foundation. More photos are available by clicking here.

But wait, there's more. The Lethbridge Hurricanes, a junior club in the Western Hockey League, are also doing a Pink in the Rink event for the first time this weekend.

Hurricanes' pink jerseyThe two-night event began last night and continues tonight. Fans can bid on the pink-infused sweaters in a silent auction. The jerseys will be distributed to the winners following tonight's game.

More details are available on the team's official web site.

Proceeds from the jerseys will support the Canadian Cancer Society and the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. Along with the proceeds from the jersey auction, funds will also be raised through the intermission promotions and donations.

Also, in a player-driven initiative, a number of the Lethbridge Hurricanes have stepped forward and volunteered to have their heads shaven at the end of the second game to show their support and commitment to this cause.

The head-shaving thing is a nice touch.

My thanks to Joshua for providing the tip and the link to Canes broadcaster Pat Siedlecki's blog, from where I nabbed the above photo. Joshua also said he'd send along some pictures from tonight's game. If he does, I'll be sure post them right here. (Scroll down.)

Mining the NHL Rumor Mill

We've done enough minor league coverage over the last week. Time to get back to our roots now. There are couple items to address, though primarily rumor.

Word on the street is the Philadelphia Flyers will be the first to break out their Winter Classic sweaters for a second game in the same season.

Claude Giroux #28According to Flyers beat writer Ryan Bright, the white sweaters worn last Friday will get another shot, this time at tonight's indoor game when the Flyers host the Maple Leafs. He said so on his Twitter account yesterday.

Just so we're clear, I haven't read anything official on this from the Flyers yet. (If you have, drop me a line.)

The rumors have been flying since before this jersey was even unveiled that it would become Philadelphia's new road sweater — being a light version of the alternate (now home) jersey launched last year. But I didn't expect to see it back so soon.

To date, only one team from each Winter Classic has gone on to use their jersey in some form on a regular basis. Since we can bet on the Flyers here, will the Bruins break the mold and carry over their awesome gold jersey as a third for 2010-11?

By the way, don't forget that jersey galleries are available on Icethetics for the last two Winter Classics. Take a look and be sure to rate them.

The rumor mill continues with the Ottawa Senators.

First, let's set it up. You'll recall in August that speculation was rampant that the Sens would be dumping their new "SENS" third jersey in favor of Jacob Barrette's Heritage sweater.

Senators Heritage jerseyWe later held a poll here at Icethetics asking readers to choose between the current alternate and the vintage design. It yielded a predictable result after more than 4,800 votes.

Now Icethetics reader Nevill is writing in with some thoughts on the future of the white road jersey.

I was at the Sens game against the Avs [last week] and noticed that their road white jerseys were discounted down in mass quantities at all the team stores and kiosks.

The retail chains around town are also selling the road whites up to 60% off, too, which leads me to believe that changes may be coming as soon as next season.

The vintage look is more apparent than ever at Scotiabank Place right now and I wouldn't be surprised to see new jerseys in the fall.

Nor would I, but considering this new uniform set debuted only in 2007, it might be a little too soon for wholesale changes. Either way, it's safe to say we're keeping the Senators on the radar for JerseyWatch 2010. Something is definitely going on in the capital city.

Wolves Test Powder Blue Waters

The minor league jersey news just keeps coming, this time out of the AHL.

The Chicago Wolves honored their everyday heroes on Saturday night with special Police & Fire Forces jerseys, which feature special shields on the shoulders.

Peter Mannino #33And yes, they're the same powder blue color that's been sweeping the NHL. It started with the Pittsburgh Penguins recapturing their youth, wearing their original colors at the Winter Classic in 2008, then later as an alternate sweater. Then the Panthers hopped on the bandwagon this season adding the hue to their new third jersey.

A couple of pictures of the jerseys in action were available on the Wolves' web site so I grabbed them to share with you.

I don't think they look awful, but I do think the red is too bright. You've got a really bright blue jersey so your accent color should be muted a bit — or at least that's my two cents. But that's what you get designing a jersey in-house.

Brett Sterling #29I might've gone with something closer to the Wolves' own brand of maroon instead of that bright red. But then again it is fire engine red, so maybe I'm out of line.

This shot of Brett Sterling offers an even better look at the sweater. You can even click to enlarge it slightly.

The jerseys must have brought Chicago good luck because they beat the Peoria Rivermen 3-2 in a shootout before a record crowd on January 2.

Chris Chelios #7They're probably hoping for more luck as this won't be the last the Wolves will wear these sweaters. They'll be used on three more occasions this month before being auctioned off for charity.

Fans will see them next on January 9, 10 and 17 — all home games. You can read the full release on the Wolves' web site.

By the way, how weird is it that Chris Chelios is playing in the minors? I guess I just thought he retired, but it turns out he declined an NHL offer just last month to keep playing for the Wolves. The guy's pushing 50 and he's just doing what he loves. No pressure, just having fun.

Before I go, I will leave you with this photo of the new powder blue jerseys hanging on the rack — straight from the aforementioned release.

Thanks to Reilly for passing along the info!
