Winter Classic Logos Unveiled!

At a press conference this afternoon, the NHL unveiled the logo for the 2011 Winter Classic along with the retro logos to be used by the Washington Capitals and Pittsburgh Penguins.

The outdoor game will take place on New Year's Day at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh. The logos were revealed on giant digital screens at the football stadium, which is normally home to the NFL's Pittsburgh Steelers.

Unlike past Winter Classic logos, which have typically used a neutral color palette, the 2011 mark seems to feature only the colors likely to be found on the Penguins' Winter Classic throwback uniforms. To be fair, though, these are the colors most associated with the city of Pittsburgh itself.

And based on the news conference, it seems everyone in Pittsburgh is very excited to be playing in the NHL's most publicized regular season game for the second time since 2008 — though this is Crosby & Co.'s first time hosting.

A staple of the Winter Classic since its inception has been retro logos and uniforms. Every team involved has looked into its past for something special to wear. This year will be no exception.

The Pittsburgh Penguins will call back to their inaugural season, 1967-68 — for the logo at least. The uniforms won't be revealed for either team until the fall. The mark features the original skating penguin wearing a scarf, all set on a "vintage" white.

The use of this logo suggests the Penguins will also wear their inaugural uniforms, which were light blue with PITTSBURGH in diagonal text across the front. Again, we'll have to wait for the fall, but this is probably a fair assumption.

The Washington Capitals will also look back to their inaugural season, 1974-75. The logo is the original script mark used from the team's inception until 1996. The Caps' current logo, in use since 2007, is call back to this mark.

With the expection of the first Winter Classic in 2008, the host team typically wears the dark uniforms, with the visitors in white — as is standard in the regular season these days. That means the Capitals will likely wear their original white sweaters.

Of course talk about Winter Classic uniforms is speculative and premature, it's easy to make educated guesses based on history. I'd really be surprised if we get anything different — though I was definitely surprised by the Bruins last year!

The Capitals will officially unveil their Winter Classic uniforms on Oct. 2 at the Capitals Convention. The Penguins have said theirs will also be unveiled some time in the fall — no specific date just yet. You can read more about today's event at NHL.com.

All-Star 2011 Logo Unveiled!

Hurricanes unveil 2011 All-Star Game logoThe Carolina Hurricanes unveiled the 2011 NHL All-Star Game logo today in downtown Raleigh. They also revealed a giant window treatment on the RBC Plaza building promoting All-Star Weekend.

The NHL released its official description of the logo as well:

The primary color of the logo is a tribute to the Hurricanes and their legion of fans, the ‘Caniacs,’ who display their team pride by wearing red during home games at the RBC Center. Also, the holding shape is consistent with the Hurricanes’ primary logo.

With the 2011 NHL All-Star Game being played in the state capital of North Carolina, Raleigh, and the popularity of the Hurricanes stretching well beyond the Triangle, inspiration for the banners along the top and bottom of the logo is derived from the official flag of the state of North Carolina.

It's very, very red. Very red. I do like the subtle hurricane shape the logo sits in. Outside of that, I think it's rather red. I understand they didn't have a lot to work with, what with red being the Canes' primary color.

Anyway, what do you think of it? Share your comments below.

By the way, there were no details released regarding the All-Star uniforms. I'm not sure when we'll get our first look at those. Of course, they may just recycle those worn during the 2009 game in Montreal. Maybe swap the blue for black. Maybe not.

Winter Classic Details Tomorrow

Later this afternoon, the Carolina Hurricanes and the NHL will unveil the 2011 All-Star Game logo. Tomorrow we'll get our first look at the Winter Classic mark — even though we've already sort of seen it.

The Pittsburgh Penguins and the NHL will hold a press conference at Heinz Field tomorrow, unveiling new details regarding the 2011 Winter Classic, including the official unveiling of the logo and a mockup of the rink inside the stadium.

The announcement was posted this morning on the Penguins' website and included the following:

Among the highlights of Tuesday’s media conference, which will be streamed live on PittsburghPenguins.com in addition to being broadcast nationally on NHL Network, are the unveiling of the 2011 Winter Classic logo and a mockup of where the ice rink will sit on the Heinz Field surface.

NBC and VERSUS play-by-play announcer Doc Emrick will be on hand to serve as the event’s emcee.

The release also mentions that Sidney Crosby, Maxime Talbot and Pascal Dupuis will be on hand for the event. It does not specifically say whether the Pens' Winter Classic uniforms will be on display. Earlier this month, team brass told local papers that the new sweaters would not be unveiled publicly until the fall.

So unless they surprise us, the main thing Icethetics readers will likely take away from tomorrow's presser will be the logo unveiling. And as I mentioned, we sort of already saw it last month. When the 2010-11 schedule was announced, a graphic on NHL.com showed a small, obscured version of the logo.

Today we're featuring the Albert Junior Hockey League's logo map. That may seem random, but actually there's a good reason for it. Starting tomorrow, we'll begin the AJHL mini-tournament of logos.

The league has 16 teams, one of which you'll have to scroll way up for on the map. The Fort McMurray Oil Barons must have lots of long bus rides to endure. And one other note on this map, the Lloydminster Bobcats don't actually play in Alberta — their arena is in Saskatchewan!

So why an AJHL tournament? Okay, I don't have a reason for that. That was pretty much just random. But at some point we'll be getting to all of the junior leagues. Some of them have pretty awesome logos. Of course some do not.

Anyway, enjoy the AJHL map. What league should we do next? I'm thinking the Central Hockey League, which recently merged with the IHL. If you have suggestions, the comment box is just below.

CHL Logo Maps

The original plan was to put all 60 Canadian Hockey League teams in the same map, but that was just too overwhelming to look at. Instead, I've given all three leagues their own logo maps.

Despite its name, the Ontario Hockey League does branch out into the United States, Pennsylvania and Michigan, to be exact. And aside from Sault Ste. Marie, Sudbury and Ottawa, it's a rather tight-knit league. The two closest teams, in Brampton and Mississauga, are literally down the road from one another.

Basically, this map tells me that if you live in or around Toronto, there is absolutely no shortage of hockey games to attend. Probably why the NHL is reluctant to let Jim Balsillie put a franchise in Hamilton.

The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League is the smallest and most compact of the Canadian leagues. Seven of the 18 teams play outside Quebec's provincial borders, including New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. There's even an American team in Maine.

The Huskies and Foreurs are the most removed from the rest of the league. The Voltigeurs and Tigres are the closest neighbors. And the Olympiques play just across the river from the OHL's Ottawa 67s.

We finish up with the Western Hockey League, the most spread out league in the CHL. The Prince George Cougars and Brandon Wheat Kings appear to be the most remote clubs. Lucky for them, the groupings throughout the rest of the league must certainly help with travel costs. The closest teams are probably the Pats and Warriors.

One more thing. If you really want to see all 60 teams in one single map, I recommend saving all three to My Maps and viewing them together that way. It's actually quite a sight.
