Is this a preview of a new Penguins jersey?

An Icethetics reader named Dan pointed out to me a unique item in the NHL's online shop. Is it a sneak peek at the Pittsburgh Penguins' 2017 NHL Stadium Series jersey?

The item in question, pictured above, is labeled as a Pittsburgh Penguins "light blue 50th anniversary name and number T-shirt." Typically, this line of shirts mimics actual team jerseys. But the design seen on this one is new. Sort of.

It appears to be a throwback modeled on the club's original sweater from the 1967-68 season — light blue with the city's name arranged diagonally across the chest. It also features the team's 50th anniversary logo on the sleeve which will be worn the shoulder of the jersey during the 2016-17 season. I'm not sure how long this jersey has been in the NHL's online shop, but given its ties to the 50th anniversary, I have to assume it's brand new.

If it is a sneak peek at the forthcoming Penguins jersey, it goes nicely with the white 50th anniversary sweater the Flyers recently unveiled — also likely to be worn at the Stadium Series game next February.

Stay tuned. So far, no word yet on when the Pens plan to unveil their Stadium Series jersey — or when the event's logo will be revealed.
