Capital Blue and Bronze

Am I the only one that misses the Washington Capitals' blue and bronze era from the mid-90s? It was such a great, unique color scheme and was never really used to its fullest potential. Apparently I'm not alone.

John Elbertson successfully adapted the Weagle to the old palette in this set of home and road sweaters. But he wasn't alone.

Dallas Kirkpatrick also saw something in those colors, though he came up with a slightly different way of using them. Think these guys are crazy? Or should the Caps bring it back?

Colorado Color Ado

Come on, that headline at least has to get me a job interview at NHL.com. Right?

All right, so Steven Grant has been working on a series of "de-Edged" NHL jerseys of late. His unique take on the Colorado Avalanche brings a distinct color palette. I like the idea of trying to avoid using a white jersey, but frankly I'm not sure sky blue is the best option. What's your take?

Update

Normally I use updates for artist revisions. But this update from Steven is less a revision and more a complete redesign of his Avalanche concept.

He writes: "It's funny that you posted my Colorado Avalanche concept today, because just yesterday I was working on an update of that concept that keeps the same colour scheme but changes almost everything else."

Still, I thought it might be nice to compare and contrast so I decided to include the new design in this post.

Bratislava Rebrand

I've got one more entry for the International Sunday series before we move on to something else for a while. Rudolf Vychovaly came up with a clever rebrand for Slovan Bratislava — a Slovakian club founded almost a century ago that just joined the KHL in 2012.

If you're unfamiliar with their current logo and uniforms, check out their website.

Tar Heel Pride

I'm kicking off a new Saturday series today that focuses on college hockey. Many of you have asked for it and some great designs have started rolling in. This one for the University of North Carolina was actually sent in last year by Dylan Alexander. I'm happy to finally share it.

You guys also asked me to include photos of what the school's existing hockey uniforms look like to compare with the concept art. Being a southern school, it's not surprising that ice hockey is merely a club sport at UNC. But I did find some photos on the club's Facebook page.

Boston-Montreal Freak Out

Two longtime rivals are meeting in Round 2 of the 2014 Stanley Cup Playoffs. Brandon Holmes has made the Boston Bruins and Montreal Canadiens the basis of this week's Freak Out Friday post. What if the Habs and Bruins kept their colors but swapped uniform designs?

Might look a little something like this. Freak or what?
